Union delivered key visual effects sequences for the upcoming Netflix thriller Baltasar Kormákur’s Apex starring Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton.  Work focussed on enhancing the film’s tense survival narrative with a range of atmospheric and environmental VFX work. 

The story centres on a mountain climber haunted by a fatal decision made during an expedition in Norway. Seeking solitude and escape from her past, she travels deep into the Australian wilderness. What begins as a journey of isolation quickly descends into a deadly game of survival when she becomes the target of a manipulative local hunter who uses the remote bush for ritualistic killings.

Union’s contribution focused on wound enhancements and crafting and extending the film’s hostile natural environments to heighten both realism and psychological tension. The team created layered atmospheric effects; including drifting mist, dense haze, and other environmental elements to reinforce the isolation and unpredictability of the wilderness setting. In addition, Union developed canyon extensions and digital environment enhancements such as forest augmentations to expand practical locations into vast, immersive landscapes, helping shape the film’s ominous and claustrophobic atmosphere. 

The survival thriller Apex became a global hit. It quickly surged to the No. 1 spot on the Netflix global film list, drawing nearly 100 million views in under a month and dominating streaming charts worldwide.
