Union was excited to team up with Bafta-winning director Roger Michell for his 2012 feature film Hyde Park on Hudson. Union created over 100 visual effects shots as the sole visual effects vendor, after supervising the shoot in London.

The film, which stars Bill Murray as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, tells the story of the first-ever visit of a reigning English monarch to America. The scope of work included detailed set extensions, animation and compositing.

The main set extension work was on the house belonging to the film’s heroine, Daisy Suckley. This was realized as a partial set build, with a CG extension to the upper storey. Union’s co-founder and overall Visual Effects Supervisor for the production, Adam Gascoyne, worked closely with Production Designer Simon Bowles and his team on the initial development of the CG build. The crew at Union then took this design all the way, to complete the final photo-realistic results.

Another key moment involved the replacement of President Roosevelt’s legs, swimming underwater at full screen. Actor Bill Murray’s legs were lidar-scanned and re-modeled to create fully digital replacement limbs, which slotted seamlessly into the shot.

Other visual effects work included day-to-night transformations, which were designed to resolve logistical challenges with filming at night.

Since completing work on Hyde Park on Hudson, Union was very pleased to reteam with Roger Michell to provide the VFX for his subsequent feature film, Le Weekend.
